Teaching Functional Language Skills to Children with Autism
This workshop will cover the basic elements of B. F. Skinner's analysis
of language as a conceptual foundation for language assessment and
intervention for children with autism. The morning and early afternoon
activities will focus on beginning a language intervention program
for a child with autism who has little (less than 100 words). The
later afternoon activities will focus on slightly more advanced language
skills. The goals of this workshop include teaching participants how
to:
o Use a behavioral approach to language assessment (e.g., mands, tacts,
and intraverbals)
o Establish an early language intervention program for children with
autism
o Utilize motivational variables to teach language in structured sessions
(discrete trial training), and in ongoing daily activities (natural
environment training)
o Write language based IEPs and use the most efficient data collection
system
o Teach more advanced language skills such as intraverbal skills and
receptive by function, feature, and class (RFFC)
