Parents and ABA therapists face enormous
challenges teaching children with autism to imitate and then spontaneously
and appropriately use language. Methods for effective transfer of skills from imitative to
spontaneous requesting to labeling and conversing will be presented, viewed
via videotape and practiced. Her
discussion also includes speech therapy techniques such as EO manipulation,
pairing/manding (via sign and echoic trails) and use of early IV and suppression
of signs to elicit vocalizations. Ms. Kasper will also touch on the concept of fluencyÑusing
language in an effective and timely manner. Ms. Kasper will cover procedures
to maintain cooperation and systematically shape functional language in children
with limited language skills

Many children with Autism have trouble
learning to speak but autism is not the cause of this difficulty. Ms. Vail will demonstrate and discuss
strategies for teaching children to speak using the principles of ABA.
Participants will be taught strategies to increase vocalizations and
teach children to produce the movements associated with speech production
within the context of functional communication.
Videotapes and case studies will be presented to demonstrate techniques
discussed.

Ms. Kasper practices as a pediatric
speech/language pathologist with emphasis on treatment of children with autism
in four statesÑWisconsin, Florida, Missouri and South Carolina. She has completed a mentorship with Dr.
Vincent Carbone to become a Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst. Ms. Kasper has completed advanced training
and self-study in the areas of applied verbal behavior, applied behavior analysis,
GreenspanÕs DIR approach and KaufmanÕs strategies for apraxia of speech.
She continues to expand her knowledge within the field and has been
awarded the ACE award for continuing education by the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association. An experienced lecturer/instructor, Ms.
Kasper has presented courses and workshops to professionals in the United
States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
She currently provides consulting services to treatment teams who serve
children with autism.
Tracy Vail, MS/CCC-SLP
Ms. Vail has been working with children
with autism for twenty-two years and currently owns a private practice, LetÕs
Talk, in Raleigh, NC, where she provides both direct and consultative services.
She is on the Board of Directors for the Mariposa School for Children
with Autism where she provides direct services as well as assisting in program
development for the children at the school.
She has been trained in applied behavior analysis, verbal behavior,
GreenspanÕs DIR approach as well as structured teaching (TEACCH). Ms. Vail has taken the coursework and is in the process of
preparing to take the exam to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

Objectives:
Increase
the number of autistic children in North Carolina receiving the benefits provided
by an intensive behavior modification program.
Promote the use
of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) as a proven, effective treatment for
autism.

of ABA for families and professionals already involved in an ABA program.
Educate medical,
educational, political and lay communities about autism and ABA.
Investigate and
influence legislative issues that affect autism.
